The first Indigenous woman to be elected to Australian federal parliament has extended a heartfelt apology to King Charles III and Queen Camilla on behalf of the nation's Indigenous people after Senator Lidia Thorpe’s “embarrassing” outburst on Monday.
Australia ’s first female Aboriginal representative Nova Peris has made a heartfelt apology to King Charles III on behalf of Indigenous Australia ns who seek to move forward as a “unified nation” after Senator Lidia Thorpe 's"disrespectful" attempt to confront the monarch.
Senator Thorpe was forcibly removed from Parliament House after she screamed at the King and Queen, demanding the monarchs: “Give us back what you stole from us: our bones, our skulls, our people. You destroyed our land. Give us a treaty. We want a treaty in this country.” “Regardless of personal beliefs, respecting our nation’s constitutional framework is essential, especially as an elected representative,” Ms Peris wrote.
“However, it is crucial to acknowledge that such decisions are for the Australian people to make through democratic means—not through rude interruptions or public outbursts.
