Al Sharpton, Founder and President of the National Action Network , opened the annual convention with Mayor Eric Adams, Public Advocate Jumaane Wiliams, Bronx DA Drcel Clark, and more than a dozen New York City and State elected officials. The hyped up ceremonial ribbon cutting officially began four days full of plenary addresses, panels, and events centered on this year’s theme, “Dealing with the Dream Under Threat.” Rev. Sharpton called the 2023 Convention to galvanize the civil rights movement and fight back against the concerted efforts to undermine democracy.
To that end, he brought together Vice President Kamala Harris and more than a dozen Biden administration officials; Tyler Perry; Earvin “Magic” Johnson; Kerry Washington; national leaders in government, business, and civil rights; the Black Church; and other fields.
