Women weren't legally considered farmers until 1994 and, while progress has been made, they are still under-represented in leadership roles.
It is an issue National Farmers Federation president Fiona Simson says she has been working on.Since its inception, the program boasts more than 50 alumni and more than 30 organisations that have partnered with them to make meaningful change towards gender diversity in the ag industry.
She has a long history of supporting rural women, and was a founding executive of the Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women's Network in 1993."Over 50 per cent of the population is female, so it's crazy not to make sure that we've got lots of great women in agriculture who are also leading," she says.Ms Somerset says it is important that people in roles such as hers identify future leaders.
"You need to bring your whole self to work every single day and people really respect leaders who are authentic," she says.
