Curator Hetti Perkins are worked with 38 Indigenous Australian artists for the fourth triennial at the National Gallery in Canberra
has unveiled a major exhibition of Indigenous art at the National Gallery of Australia, collaborating with traditional custodians and emerging painters, sculptors, dancers and filmmakers.the fourth National Indigenous Art Triennial opens on Saturday, showcasing 18 new bodies of work by 38 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from around Australia.
“In their works, the artists in this exhibition assert the prevalence of ceremony as a forum for art-making today in First Nations communities.”Preparation for the exhibition has included landmark engagement with local Ngambri-Ngunnawal elders of the capital region, including Matilda House and her son Paul Girrawah House., a permanent public art installation of traditional Indigenous tree scarring around the gallery’s grounds. The trunks of trees show striking carved designs.
“The concept of iteration, in which each unique action is simultaneously new and old, is at the heart of ceremony.”is supported by the NGA’s Indigenous art sponsor, Wesfarmers Arts. The exhibition is set to tour the country from the end of 2022 and for the first time a digital publication will bring the works to a global audience.
