Major philanthropic support will fund a project to revitalise the gardens linking the National Gallery of Australia and Lake Burley Griffin.

Already a subscriber? The National Gallery of Australia will ask Rich Listers and philanthropists to fund a $60 million redesign of its Canberra sculpture garden as part of a plan to achieve the full vision of the incomplete and underappreciated site.

“This is about connecting all the pieces and creating new opportunities for new public sculpture. There are parts of the site which have never been developed.”Established in 1981, the sculpture garden was designed by landscape architects Harry Howard and Associates, with Barbara Buchanan and Roger Vidler collaborating.

Mr Mitzevich said the gallery wanted design teams from Australia and overseas to enter the competition, and hopes that landscape architects, Indigenous Australian practitioners, artists, architects, botanist and horticulturalists will enter.
