The National Guard is called in to Minneapolis as the city braces for more fiery clashes, after protesters enraged by the death of George Floyd set neighbourhoods ablaze and looted department stores.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has called in the National Guard as a wounded Minneapolis braces for more violence, one day after rioting over the death of a handcuffed black man in police custody reduced parts of a neighbourhood to a smoking shambles, with burned buildings, looted stores and angry graffiti demanding justice.

In a strip mall across the street from the 3rd Precinct police station, the focus of the previous night's protests, the windows in nearly every business had been smashed. Only the 24-hour laundromat appeared to have escaped unscathed.
