Back in her salon 12 months after the melanoma was removed from her arm, Kira Eacott is having honest conversations about skin health with clients and family.
When Newcastle hair salon manager Kira Eacott signed up for a free course on understanding skin cancer , she didn't expect to find a suspicious spot on her skin.
These skin cancer courses are being rolled out as melanoma charities advocate for a national skin screening program.According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, almost 17,000 Australians will be diagnosed with melanoma this year."The statistics tell us that two in three Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer before they turn 75," said Claudia Tolhurst, executive officer at the Hunter Melanoma Foundation.
"Melanoma is the second most diagnosed cancer , sitting behind prostate cancer," she said."That tells us that improved treatments in melanoma are having an impact on survival, but also that early detection is saving lives."Spotting suspect spots in the salon "When you run the comb through the hair, you might feel a little bump on the skin and it automatically makes you look," Mrs Eacott said.is for border: Are the edges uneven, scalloped or notched?is for diameter: Is the spot greater than 6mm across, or is it smaller than 6mm but growing larger?is for growing: Is it growing quickly?"You're then looking at any discolouration of the skin, any marks or dryness around it.
"We have screening programs for breast cancer, bowel cancer and prostate cancer, but there's no screening program at the moment for melanoma," Ms Tolhurst said.
