Football Victoria has launched an investigation into an incident of fan violence that forced the abandonment of an NPL match between the Oakleigh Cannons and Dandenong Thunder on Friday night. The national second division match was called off early in the second half when initial attempts to calm rival fans became undone.

Spectators begun to spill out onto the pitch at Jack Edwards Reserve in Oakleigh, while some disturbing footage shows at least one fan being knocked unconscious in the carnage. Security lost control of the spot fires and police were called to defuse the situation, as fans were eventually escorted from the pitch. Around 500 spectators were at the match, some of which were throwing items at the police and other people in the area. The Cannons were up 2-0 at the time, but the match will be replayed in full, and that scoreline will not count. A time for the match replay has not yet been slated, but it will be closed to fans. Tensions flared when travelling Thunder fans were enraged by a celebration from Oakleigh striker Stef Valentini in the 42nd minute, causing the game to be paused. Referees attempted to restart the match after a half-time break, but they pulled the pin when fans began to encroach on the pitch. “Football Victoria is aware of a serious incident that took place at the Round 5 fixture between Oakleigh Cannons FC and Dandenong Thunder FC,” a statement from Football Victoria reads. “FV condemns all forms of anti-social behaviour and violence, in line with FV’s rules of competition and spectator code of behaviour. “FV has contacted both clubs, who join FV in condemning the behaviour and will fully co-operate with the investigation. “FV is engaging with all relevant stakeholders to collect detail on the incident. “FV will share further detail on sanctions in due course.” Police said three people were injured, but did not require hospitalisation. Victoria Police said three people were injured, but no reports had yet been made. “The exact circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated, but no one has made a police report at this stage,” a police spokesperson said.
