Although the Coalition held onto its regional electorates, strong challenges from independents in three seats –Nationals MP for Gippsland Darren Chester warned the Coalition against lurching to the right, or it will suffer more election pain.Chester, who will extend his margin to about 20 per cent, said the election defeat should come as a serious warning to the Coalition ahead of the Victorian election in November.
Victorian Nationals leader Peter Walsh insisted his MPs were listening to their constituents’ concerns, which included a stronger commitment to tackling climate change. Dyson, a comedian and former Triple J presenter who contested the 2019 election, said he was thrilled with the likelihood of doubling his primary vote to just over 20 per cent.
In the northern Victoria electorate of Nicholls, newly elected Nationals MP Sam Birrell retained the seat for his party, but the previous margin of 20 per cent was likely to fall below 5 per cent after a challenge from independent Rob Priestly.
