A proposal for mandatory high-visibility clothing for cyclists and scooter riders is being put forward ahead of the Western Australian state election.
Feedback from cyclists has been mixed, with some concerned the idea will shift the onus of safety onto vulnerable road users.A West Australian MP thinks so and wants to take the idea to the looming state election.
While Mr Rundle conceded it would be challenging for police to monitor, he hoped riders would embrace the idea.If passed, the Nationals MP said it would form part of their campaign going into next year's state election.The WA government's own cycling safety website advises cyclists to wear "brightly coloured or reflective clothing to increase visibility".
A 2018 WA government report on road safety practices found wearing a helmet did not protect cyclists as much as good cycling infrastructure. "It comes down to complacency of drivers and how they manage themselves … and the awareness of what's around them," he said.Collie Cycle Club President Mark Paget said there were other safety measures he found more effective as a cyclist."Think about the traffic that you're amongst, because you haven't got any protection, regardless of whether you've got hi-vis or not."He said it would be more useful if sports brands made cyclists' clothing more visible.
