Tanya Plibersek's deal with the Greens and an independent senator for supporting her Nature Positive legislation has been cancelled, pushing the bill to next year. The deal included concessions on native forest logging and national environmental standards.

Tanya Plibersek reached a written agreement with the Greens and independent senator David Pocock, supporting her Nature Positive legislation. Guardian Australia learned that Plibersek informed Anthony Albanese of the deal before drafting a letter to her negotiating partners. However, Albanese assured the Western Australia n premier, Roger Cook, about the deal and later called the Greens and independents to a meeting to cancel the deal.

The bill, intended to introduce a national environment protection authority and an information-gathering agency, has been postponed to next year, causing bitter disappointment. The deal involved dropping the demand for an agreement to end native forest logging in exchange for a framework for new national environmental standards applicable to regional forest agreements. It also included commitments to halt illegal deforestation, protect native habitats, involve Indigenous Australians in threatened species assessment, and have the new information body report on deforestation and land clearing
