Amidst the stretch run of the 2022-23 NBA season, the league office and the National Basketball Players Association are nearing a new collective bargaining agreement.
This time around, the two sides are discussing a smoothing process, according to Charania.in September 2021 that a $171 million salary cap was possible in 2025-26 if the two sides didn't agree to smoothing. Even if they do, the source told Jensen that the salary cap could increase annually by $15 million.
Regardless of whether the two sides agree to smoothing, the cap should rise substantially in the latter half of the decade. "I don't think we're approaching it necessarily in an adversarial way with the players association," Silver said during All-Star Weekend."We're working collectively together with our doctors, our data scientists, and trying to see if there's an optimal way for player performance. If it means at some point we conclude that we're better off elongating the schedule to reduce back-to-backs, for example, that's something that's worth looking at.
The two sides are also discussing the implementation of an in-season tournament, which would aim to spice up the long slog of the regular season. in December 2021 that there was"renewed momentum" for"an in-season tournament that would begin with pool play as part of the regular-season schedule prior to the teams with the best records advancing to an eight-team, single-elimination tournament.""The view from our governors has been let’s figure out exactly what the new CBA looks like, let’s figure out what our new media deals look like. Then let’s think about expansion," Silver said at All-Star Weekend.
