NBA Season Preview: What To Watch For In The Pacific Division - Included: D'Angelo Russell, Kawhi Leonard & Paul George, Kyle Kuzma, Deandre Ayton, and the Kings' young core.

The addition of Russell, however, seemed odd. For a team so heavily invested in winning now, and who puts a premium on efficient scoring and two-way play, Russell’s age , modest percentages , and shaky defensive abilities didn’t exactly look like a typical Warriors signing.with Minnesota being brought up as the primary trade destination

The Warriors may have prioritized re-signing Durant, but they could look smart for walking away with Russell, a younger player who isn’t going to miss the whole season, and thus waste a year of Curry’s prime, and someone who is trending upwards instead of the other way, while being locked up contractually until 2023.

Logic would dictate the Clippers do something similar, although the team hinted that their load management wouldn’t be as strict, but that tune could change should Leonard feel any discomfort in the early stages of the season. Danny Green, Quinn Cook, Troy Daniels, and Avery Bradley can all make perimeter jumpshots, and while the Lakers did hang onto a few of their guys from last season, most notably Rajon Rondo and JaVale McGee, they also re-signed Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and make a low-risk, high-reward signing in Dwight Howard, after their previous signing, DeMarcus Cousins, tore his ACL.

The Lakers will need for third-year forward Kyle Kuzma to step up and become Mr. Reliable as the third cog in the offense. Kuzma can score but he will need to do more with all the uncertainties that surround this team. Should Howard not work out, there’s going to be a gap in the rebounding that Kuzma’s 6’9 frame needs to cover. Should players go through longer stretches with shooting struggles, it’s crucial that Kuzma improves on his 30.3% shooting from deep that he sported last year.

Ultimately, the Suns can afford to test a few things out with their youngsters. The team isn’t going anywhere this season, and likely not next year either, so this is a time of development.
