NBN Co will shed 800 jobs under a long-anticipated restructure as the rollout of the $50 billion project comes to an end.

"With the initial network build complete and as we embark on our customer-led transformation in earnest, I would like to announce a series of changes to our operating model and executive management structure, as we align ourselves for the future," NBN Co chief executive Stephen Rue said in an all-staff email on Wednesday.

Under the changes, the organisation will consolidate its sales and marketing teams and reorganise its engineering, regulatory and commercial operations., with $4.1 billion available for investments and upgrades to the network.So far 7.3 million premises have activated their NBN connections. About 60 per cent of people have chosen mid-tier 50Mbps packages.

The budget for the NBN now sits at $52.5 billion, including $29.5 billion in federal government equity and a $19.5 billion government loan along with the private debt.
