Hundreds of migrating birds were killed last week when they collided with a building in Chicago. CHICAGO, Illinois — Nearly 1,000 birds were found dead outside a building in Chicago after they collided overnight with the glass windows while migrating, reports say.964 birds, mostly warblers, were found dead Thursday morning. An estimated 80 of the songbirds were stunned by survived.

“It was just like a carpet of dead birds at the windows there,” said David Willard, a retired bird division collections manager at the Chicago Field Museum. “A normal night would be zero to 15 birds. It was just kind of a shocking outlier to what we’ve experienced. In 40 years of keeping track of what’s happening at McCormick, we’ve never seen anything remotely on that scale.

It’s estimated that 368 million to 988 million birds die each year in the U.S. from window strikes. The Chicago Bird Collision Monitors tells audobon.org there were an estimated 450 other birds killed and 300 injured in building strikes around the city. “Unfortunately, it is really common,” said Matt Igleski, executive director of the Chicago Audubon Society. “We see this in pretty much every major city during spring and fall migration. This was a very catastrophic single event, but when you add it all up , it’s always like that.”
