Morgan Haverfield-Price was behind the wheel of a four-tonne concrete pumping truck when he ran over taxi driver Joe Bucca during a confrontation in Chatswood.
A truck driver with a “woeful” traffic record, who ran over and killed a man during a road rage incident, has been jailed for the worst case of negligent driving a Sydney magistrate said she had ever seen.
Sentencing Haverfield-Price in Downing Centre Local Court on Friday, Magistrate Susan McIntyre said the truck driver was seen by witnesses “weaving down” Fullers Road and “up close to the victim’s vehicle”, expressing his “consternation” at Bucca’s driving and execution of a right-hand turn. “I am of the view that Mr Haverfield-Price’s driving of a very heavy cement pumping truck was not only reckless but that his treatment of the road and the road users was negligent in the extreme.“A more serious example of failing to take reasonable and prudent care and to calculate one’s surroundings I have not seen.”
The magistrate said she was sure the witnesses and Bucca’s family, who lost a beloved father and husband, had also suffered trauma. The court received a victim impact statement from Bucca’s wife, although this was not read aloud.
