According to Sinwar, their deaths and those of other Gazans would “infuse life into the veins of this nation, prompting it to rise to its glory and honor”. It hasn’t. Their deaths have simply created, and will create, more violence and hatred, in what is already a giant charnel house.
UN spokesman Jeremy Laurence expressed concerns about breaches of rules of proportionality and lack of regard for civilian safety by the Israeli forces in their blitz on Nuseirat refugee camp. He also noted that Hamas was, as usual, showing its callous disregard for civilians by holding hostages in densely populated areas. “All these actions by both parties may amount to war crimes,” he told a regular UN briefing in Geneva.
