Decarbonisation of Australia’s biggest export industry will require almost seven times more power and BHP wants gas to play a role until at least 2053.
Already a subscriber?BHP’s flagship iron ore division will consume almost seven times more power by 2040 because of, compelling the miner to expand a gas-fired power station which it will rely on until 2053.
BHP is seeking an extra 120 MW of gas-fired generation, which would take total capacity at the site to 274 MW.The miner said the extra gas generation would enable it to phase out the 35 MW diesel section of Yarnima, achieving a notional capacity of 239 MW, or 55 per cent more than it currently generates.
The diesel displaced by the extra gas-fired generation would mean actual emissions between 2027 and 2052 would be about 3 million tonnes lower than if diesel consumption remained steady. This assumes that Yarnima’s diesel generators are not used in emergencies nor for maintenance campaigns, which BHP has declined to rule out.
