Analysts have backed Nine boss Mike Sneesby’s claims that slowing growth of global streaming giants could help Stan.
Analysts have backed claims from Nine chief executive Mike Sneesby that Netflix’s abrupt slowdown in growth could have a silver lining for the company’s platform Stan and other streaming services without a direct pipeline to Hollywood.
“The flow-on impact from that Netflix result and reaction has been that global businesses are going to have to be a lot more rational about their consideration in investment,” he said. “That means we’ll see more content supply.”Anna Kucera Netflix spent $US17 billion on content in 2021 alone, with original shows and movies a key plank of its strategy for subscriber growth. Other Hollywood entertainment giants such as Disney and Paramount, which historically licensed their content to services like Netflix and Stan, have launched direct to consumer streaming services of their own.
“This suggests maybe it’s going to be more nuanced and there’s going to be a bit more content that’s still going to be licensed,” McLeish said. “If some of those studios can achieve profitability better by selling content in some markets, rather than going direct to consumers in every market, then they’re potentially more likely to look at that.”
