The Brooklyn Nets are reportedly considering trading Ben Simmons before the NBA trade deadline. In a separate development, Jimmy Butler is likely to be traded away from the Miami Heat.
The Brooklyn Nets are undergoing a rebuild, and while it was already unlikely that Ben Simmons would be on the roster next year, there's also a chance he could be traded before then. A buyout would involve Simmons giving up a portion of his $40 million salary, which will likely be his final big-money contract. The Nets are better served to either let Simmons' contract expire and free up more salary cap space or explore a trade to see if they can get anything in return before parting ways.
Sources indicate that Brooklyn is still open to discussing Simmons in trade conversations. If Simmons is dealt before the deadline, it won't be part of a move that sees the Nets take back long-term money. Simmons prefers to be traded away from the team ahead of the Feb. 6 deadline. Meanwhile, in a separate development, Jimmy Butler is likely to be traded away from the Miami Heat. Butler is on the books for $49 million this year with a $52 million player option for next year. Potential suitors have been informed that Butler intends to decline that option to become a free agent. Multiple teams have reportedly reached out to the Heat, and Butler is open to the Suns, Warriors, Mavericks, and Rockets among others. He is averaging 18.5 points per game this year, his sixth with the Heat. The Heat gave Bam Adebayo a three-year, $166 million extension last offseason—while the team and Butler failed to reach an agreement on an extension. Miami also has 24-year-old Tyler Herro, who is enjoying a career year, in the midst of a four-year, $120 million deal. It appears the Heat prefer to move forward building around the pair of younger stars rather than Butler
