On Wednesday morning I saw the unmasked faces of the baristas at my local coffee shop for the first time in months. It felt like a new beginning. That night I headed into the Sydney CBD to meet friends, feeling a little nervous, with the news ofOn Thursday I was there again, for work. Somebody in a bookstore told me things that day were quieter than was usual for Christmas. A woman running a newsagent told me the whole day had been deadly quiet – though there had been a rush in the past hour .

And perhaps – politicians being human, driven by human impulses – this goes some way to explaining the insistence by our governments right now that all is likely to be well, that we can live our lives as though the virus barely matters. Perhaps they are just looking to turn the page, too.
