Interesting Engineering is a cutting edge, leading community designed for all lovers of engineering, technology and science.
3D-printed two-layer cerebral cortical tissue visualised within a mouse brain slice. The implanted neural cells were labelled with fluorescent markers .
“The use of living brain slices creates a powerful platform for interrogating the utility of 3D printing in brain repair,” said Francis Szele, associate professor and senior author, in anThe advancing field of 3D printing of biological tissues entails the layer-by-layer fabrication of living tissue structures using specialized 3D printers. This pioneering technology holds immense potential in various areas, particularly medicine and research.
The tissue was 3D printed using specialized thousands of human induced pluripotent stem cells , which can create any desired human cell type for therapeutic purposes. “Our droplet printing technique provides a means to engineer living 3D tissues with desired architectures, which brings us closer to the creation of personalized implantation treatments for brain injury,” said Linna Zhou, one of the senior authors.
