Now there's Moon Music, the band's 10th album, which spices up some of the group's most painfully earnest instincts but, frustratingly, still hasn't learned from their most risk-averse mistakes. You simply must take the bad with the good. 'We Pray' ropes together Afropop star Burna Boy, skilled British rapper Little Simz, and Palestinian vocalist Elyanna for a grand pseudo-psalm of big, hummable melodies that calls for peace while strategically avoiding taking a strong political stance.
Objection your honour. Because the quality on Moon Music waxes and wanes as much as its namesake. It isn't a terrible album, just merely nice, and, disappointingly, exactly what you'd expect these days from England's least anxiety-inducing act.It takes a lot of spine to make it in the music industry, and Kasey Chambers knows it.
The strength of Chambers's voice and lyrics shine on 'Silverado Girl' and 'Arlo', the kind of touching ballads thehas always excelled at. It's proof of a seasoned performer and naturally gifted songwriter who only gets better with each passing record, and Backbone is among her very best. A sense of curiosity also threads itself throughout the album. Interesting instrumentals take prominence on songs like 'Do Without You' and 'Over Now' – a pure moment to highlight Caribou's always-changing vision as a musician and producer.
The hyperactive 'Zero Sum' is one of The Smile's finest moments: "Windows 95! Windows 95!" Yorke barks with a sarcastic smirk amid fidgety, malfunctioning guitar, snaking rhythms and parping brass. These kinds of sublime moments show how The Smile continue to mine rewarding new configurations while they innovate at a furious clip.
