The official synopsis for the upcoming Alien sequel shows that the film will be returning the sprawling franchise to its pared-down roots.
The new Alien sequel has revealed its official synopsis. The film, which will be the ninth entry in the franchise is set to be a standalone story not necessarily connected to the other characters in the franchise beyond the ravenous and deadly Xenomorph, an alien with acidic blood and a nearly impenetrable exoskeleton who has hunted down many humans over the years.

They also shared the full cast that will be joining stars Cailee Spaeny and Isabela Merced, which includes Rye Lane's David Jonsson, Shadow and Bone's Archie Renaux, The Batman's Spike Fearn, and newcomer Aileen Wu.
In this ninth entry in the immensely popular and enduring film series, a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.The Alien Franchise Timeline Explained From this synopsis, it is clear that the franchise is attempting to reset some of its more complicated mythology and tell a more streamlined story. However, for the time being it is not entirely clear where on the overall timeline the story takes place.
The first three films take place on a linear timeline, though there are huge jumps in between several of them. While Alien 1979 takes place over the course of just a few days in 2122, 1986's Aliens follows survivor Ellen Ripley after she has been discovered adrift and in stasis 57 years later. While 1992's Alien 3 takes place not long afterward, 1997's Alien Resurrection takes a huge jump, following a Ripley clone 200 years later.
After that point, the Alien franchise gets considerably more complicated. Both 2004's Alien vs Predator and 2007's Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem are set on contemporary Earth, so they are technically prequels, while 2012's Prometheus and its 2017 follow-up Alien: Covenant are also prequels but set in between those two branches of the franchise in 2089.
