This is a story about the gift of painting, the love of art, and the genius of the Dutch masters from their Golden Age.Carel Fabiritius is known by only a dozen or so paintings; Vermeer owned three of them. There are thought to be no prints or drawings left. He joined the studio of Rembrandt, but Laura Cumming stresses he “appears entirely singular, independent of both” with “each new work an astonishing departure”.
Cumming intersperses her thoughts on both painters with memories of landscapes, predominantly those of both Edinburgh and Holland. She recalls her trips to see Dutch Art at the National Gallery and the dark-red vinyl of the number 23 bus heading for the Mound, “that sucked at the back of your thighs”.
Cumming is particularly good at giving us a better idea of what the disaster must have been like by comparing it to the recent catastrophe in Beirut. If you haven’t seen images of this horror, there are regular reminders on Instagram.
