The long ride to Brisbane Olympic glory could well begin in Murarrie, with the city council committing to a new cycle centre in the city’s east.
Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner directed $16.1 million in ratepayers’ money towards the new training facility at Murarrie Recreation Reserve inAn artist’s impression of Brisbane City Council’s $35 million cycle park to be built on the Murarrie Recreation Reserve.He said the new venue, to be built over existing parkland, would be used as an elite training centre ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as a community asset for those not necessarily going for gold.
Schrinner said the redevelopment of the reserve, situated between Murarrie train station and Wynnum Road, was expected to be completed by 2024, eight years out from the Brisbane Games. The facility will include an international cycling track, a 500-metre speed-skating track, and a multipurpose clubhouse.Future stages will include a learn-to-ride facility, a BMX track, special track lighting, and public amenities such as picnic shelters, barbecues, and an off-leash dog area.
Schrinner said council had consulted AusCycling, the sport’s national governing body, as well as local cycling and speed-skating clubs, and the community at large.
