An online petition calling for changes to DWP rules for income-related benefits has received over 10,000 signatures of support

More than 10,380 people have signed an online petition calling on the Department for Work and Pensions to make changes to current rules for those claiming income-related benefits such as Universal Credit and JobSeeker's Allowance who “find love and move in with a partner”.

The UK Government must now respond to the proposals within the petition as it has passed the 10,000 signature threshold. Having passed the first signature milestone, if it reaches 100,000, it would be considered for debate in Parliament. Moving in with a partner needs to be reported to the DWP as a change of circumstances and may change the nature of a claim - depending on the benefit involved - from a single claim to a joint one.

Top Money Stories Today The petition states: “Under current rules, people on ESA or UC risk losing some or all of our benefits if we find love and move in with a partner. This means that we have to choose either happiness or financial independence. These unfair rules have discouraged me from looking for love at any point in my life."
