Queen Elizabeth II is the only monarch to have appeared on Australia’s decimal coins, but that will change with new ones featuring the King.

It’s expected that an image of King Charles III will replace that of the Queen on Australian coins from next year.

The Queen has featured on all Australian coins in the decimal currency age, including this $2 coin held by Royal Australian Mint CEO Leigh Gordon in 2021.Queen Elizabeth II has been the only monarch to feature on Australia’s decimal currency, which was introduced in 1966. An official portrait of King Charles will be required before the artwork for the updated note can be completed.The current $5 polymer note was first released in September 2016 as part of the RBA’s upgrading of the entire banknote series.

Anne Jessopp, chief executive of The Royal Mint, said the Queen gave each of her coin portraits “her personal seal of approval”.
