The selection process was highly competitive, with seven firms competing for the bid. City staff recommended Matthews’ company after scoring it well above both local and national firms.
Matthews has a long track record of successfully delivering increasingly complex projects, including the city-owned Omni Convention Center Hotel, which has defied critics and proved a great investment for Dallas.Should the vote go as expected, we wish Matthews luck in what will be his most complicated project yet. It’s not just about demolishing much of what exists now and rebuilding a reoriented convention center.
Should the council accept Inspire Dallas’ bid, we will still be a year away, at best, from seeing dirt turning. The design of the project is still essentially conceptual at this phase. The scope of work for Matthews’ firm is to manage the project like an owner. That means working with the city to get to a final design and to get that design built.
It’s a massive undertaking that will be years in the works. But the wheels should really start turning today, moving Dallas to a better future.
