NSW, South Australia and the ACT health systems are suffering the most stress, according to a new report which shows the burdens of the winter omicron wave.
are showing a tapering off in influenza and other respiratory disease across all age groups. Over all respiratory disease levels are considered “moderate”.
Dr James Wood, a modeller from the University of NSW’s School of Population Health, agreed the hospitalisation ratio to cases was higher in this wave compared with the summer wave. Dr Wood said ICU admissions tend to skew younger, noting that not many people over 80 get admitted to ICU. “But it remains the case that risk of severe diseases rises sharply with age and that’s starts to lead to significant hospitalisation risk once you hit 60 or so – so with rising cases in people over that age, you end up with high hospital occupancy,” he said.Data about COVID-19 hospital admissions are blurred by different reporting standards in some states.
