'Give Me Liberty' profiles how the Del Cerro school was one of only seven 'schools of tomorrow' in the U.S. that offered cutting-edge modular scheduling in 1968
When Patrick Henry High School opened its doors in the Del Cerro neighborhood 55 years ago, it may have looked like many of the new campuses in the San Diego Unified School District, but it was groundbreaking in its approach to teaching and student autonomy. Built in 1968 with grant money from the now-defunct Danforth Foundation, Patrick Henry was one of just seven 'schools of tomorrow' in the United States that offered the experimental Model Schools Program.
'Patrick Henry’s innovative modular scheduling became a laboratory of experimental education, providing students with unprecedented freedom to make choices that shaped their academic goals,' Plaut said. 'An open campus, flexible elective studies, enhanced tutoring and cutting-edge teaching approaches in traditional core courses were all part of an initiative that encouraged students to take more responsibility and think independently.
