Plant Journeys, Stories of East Asian Plants in Hornel’s Home and Garden, takes visitors both inside and outside the National Trust for Scotland property

A new exhibition brings together the Japanese souvenirs and East Asian plants from the Kirkcudbright home of artist E A Hornel.

The display highlights Japanese objects and images featuring plant imagery from Hornel’s collections before a plant trail shows the same plants in the Edwardian garden. And the trips also seem to have influenced the design of the garden, which features east Asian plants and a pond with stepping stones.

Curator Jennifer Melville, who is the project leader of Facing Our Past at the National Trust for Scotland, said: “This exhibition helps visitors to connect the interior of E A Hornel’s home and studio with what is found outdoors, rather than treating them as separate entities.
