Melbourne Airport is set to gain a new airline following confirmation another Chinese carrier will launch services to the Victorian capital.

The Tullamarine airport this week announced Shanghai -based Juneyao Airlines will start flying to Melbourne from December 19 with its Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

"We are thrilled to welcome Juneyao Airlines to Melbourne and look forward to working with them to make this service a success," Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus said. "Melbourne Airport will now be served by more international carriers than ever before, and with the average daily international flight worth $154 million to the Victorian economy, it highlights the need for our investment in projects such as the international terminal upgrades and $3 billion third runway."

The move comes just two months after the Chinese government revealed Australians travelling to China for up to 15 days would no longer need a visa.Qantas recently axed its Sydney-Shanghai
