NRL officials have released footage that they say unequivocally proves the bunker was right to deny a Jack Howarth try in Melbourne’s grand final loss to Penrith. Viral screenshots set off a storm of controversy, with one angle in particular appearing to show the ball was grounded at the bottom of a pile of Panthers defenders. But a fresh look has combined to prove it was an optical illusion of sorts — in truth, Howarth’s own arm was always underneath.
New angle completely flips NRL grand final controversy. Down by four points early in the second half, Storm winger Xavier Coates batted back a towering bomb into the hands of Howarth. The centre was mobbed by Panthers defenders as he attempted to burrow over and referee Ashley Klein said he had been held up in-goal by Izack Tago and Dylan Edwards on Penrith’s right edge. Howarth’s effort was sent for review by bunker official Grant Atkins, who supported the on-field decision of no try.
