Lancaster City Council is asking for new ideas to redevelop the former Frontierland site amid concerns previous submissions focused too much on housing.
The local authority is seeking fresh expressions of interest for the seafront site of what was once an iconic fairground. According to a new contract tender, the confirmation of funding for the ambitious Eden Project Morecambe plan has led to the new search. Earlier this year, the Government confirmed that the eco-tourism development would receive £50m of investment through its Levelling Up Fund and the project is expected to trigger wider investment and redevelopment across the resort. With hundreds of thousands of visitors expected each year, the development is seen as having the potential for a transformative impact on Morecambe's economy and prosperity.
A retail-led scheme with a restaurant, pub and hotel was later proposed and approved by the city council, only for planning permission to expire without the project being carried out. Lancaster Council previously sought expressions of interest from developers but is now asking for new ideas which have a greater focus on leisure use.
A listing on the Government's contract finder service states: "Following confirmation of Eden's £50M Levelling Up Funding bid, expressions of interest are sought for a regeneration development opportunity on Morecambe's seafront. The previous EOI received good interest. However, most responses were housing led with an ancillary hotel and leisure component. With Eden now confirmed, the council is keen to understand the potential for a greater focus on leisure.
