“I believe that we need to be moving away from fossil fuels, not championing them,” said Jerome Laxale, who holds the NSW seat of Bennelong. He accepted gas was necessary as a transition fuel but said, “our government should continue to execute this transition as quickly as possible”. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the strategy was consistent with Labor’s long-held commitment to net zero.Ms King said the government remained committed to reducing the use of gas and reducing emissions from the gas that is extracted, and that any new developments would be covered under Labor’s safeguard mechanism that caps industrial emissions.“As we know, the oil and gas fields of the Bass Strait are now depleting,” she said.
