"I do so in the place – in the very courtroom – where traditional laws and customs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were first recognised by the common law of Australia, in the decision of this court in Mabo v State of Queensland ." "It's not a practice of which I'm aware of in the past, it is ... not without precedent in other jurisdictions – so it's nothing for people to be afraid of," he said.

During Chief Justice Gageler's time in the Mason office, the court dealt with significant cases including the Tasmanian Dams case, which still resonates today. Chief Justice Gageler is taking on the job at 65, leaving him five years to make his mark on the court before he must retire at the age of 70.Also getting a guernsey on the High Court bench today is Robert Beech-Jones from the New South Wales Supreme Court.

The other is that although Justice Beech-Jones studied in Canberra and has been a judge in New South Wales, he was born in Tasmania.
