The chance of a lifetime came twice for a New Jersey artist to celebrate Black History on the cover of Time magazine.
"I was a single mom. I didn't do the arts for 20, almost 30 years," said Lavett Ballard. "But if you keep doing what you love to do, the rewards will come."
Ballard got married, went back to school, became a professor, and hasn't stopped creating art since then. But a follow-up conversation revealed the truth. She had been recruited as one of several artists to create a tribute to the 100th anniversary of women's suffrage in March of 2020. "It was more like, does this happen twice?," said Ballard after receiving yet another request via email.& Destiny: How to Build A Truly American Democracy" by Isabel Wilkerson.
