Critical infrastructure providers will have new obligations to beef up cybersecurity and identify physical risks that could disrupt essential goods and services.

Critical infrastructure providers including energy and telecommunications companies, payment system operators, media, and food and grocery suppliers will face new obligations to protect themselves from cyber attacks and other threats under legislation passed on Thursday.

These include providing cyber officials with telemetry from their networks, allowing the government “to build a near-real time threat picture”. These providers will also have to perform “vulnerability assessments” to identify weak points in their cyber defences, allowing the government to determine systemic weaknesses and patterns that need to be rectified.

Entities will be required to prepare an annual report for their sector’s regulator, identifying hazards and what they have done to mitigate risks. The risk-management obligations will apply to electricity, gas and liquid fuels companies, water and sewerage services, payment systems, data storage, processing and domain name providers, hospitals and broadcasters.
