New Liberal Senator Maria Kovacic has refused to reveal whether she will support or oppose the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Ms Kovacic has called on the Liberals to be “bold and brave” on tax reform and consider making childcare tax deductible.

Former prime minister Scott Morrison made several visits to the Western Sydney electorate at the time, declaring Ms Kovacic “the real eel” in reference to her passionate support the Paramatta Eels in the NRL.Speaking exclusively to Sky News Australia, Ms Kovacic said “the ‘real eel’ has followed me around”.Ms Kovacic lost the lower house contest but now sits in the Senate, having filled the vacancy created by the death of Jim Molan.“We need to be bold and brave about it,” she said.

The mother of three, who ran her own business in Western Sydney for more than two decades, insists more needs to be done to improve female participation, like more childcare support. “Why are the cost so high and what can we do in order to mitigate from taxation policy, say, in terms of do we consider some form of tax deductibility.”

“I think we’ve been very clear in our direction… cost of living is the number one issue today,” she said.
