ANALYSIS: New look, new era for the Perth Scorchers, but returning to the Big Bash penthouse is easier said than done

He is carrying a heavy workload, being in the somewhat unique position of coaching both a state team and a Big Bash franchise.

South Australia has Jason Gillespie at the Adelaide Strikers as coach and Queensland has put former Australia coach Darren Lehmann in charge of Brisbane Heat.Tasmania has a similar setup to Western Australia, with Adam Griffith leading both Tasmania and Hobart. It will be interesting to see whether the trend towards standalone Big Bash coaches will continue, with people like World Cup-winning former England coach Trevor Bayliss saying he is interested in coaching in the BBL.WA did win the domestic one-day title this season, but that squad included Marsh, Coulter-Nile, Stoinis and D'arcy Short, all of whom are contracted with BBL teams other than Perth.

Former Test opener Simon Katich has now been appointed as Scorchers list manager to help with player retention and squad strategy. But despite the loss of the big names and injuries to frontline bowlers Andrew Tye and Jason Behrendorff, Langer likes what he has seen from his old side in the off-season.
