Two mpox cases have been detected in Western Australia, prompting heath authorities to urge high-risk groups to stay alert for symptoms of the virus.

WA Health has issued an alert after two mpox cases were detected in the state just days after the World Health Organisation declared a global health emergency for the virus.

WA Health’s Communicable Disease Control Director Dr Paul Armstrong said those diagnosed with the clade II strain usually experience a “milder illness” which could last anywhere between two to four weeks and resolves without specific treatment.“Now that we are seeing locally acquired cases of mpox in WA, it’s really important to raise awareness of this virus and encourage people at risk to get vaccinated,” he said in a statement.

“Mpox infections have been increasing in Australia over the past few months – particularly among sexually active men who have sex with men and through higher risk activities such as casual sex and multiple partners,” Dr Armstrong said.
