More than 3300 people have been caught illegally using their phones while driving by new mobile phone detection cameras in one week across NSW.

The cameras were rolled out on December 1, with more than 773,000 vehicles scanned for drivers using their phones at six locations.

More than 500 motorists a day have been caught using their mobile phones across NSW, including on the Harbour Bridge.Unlike speed cameras, the six fixed and two mobile trailer-mounted cameras aren’t sign posted. The Sydney Harbour Bridge was one of the locations targeted by the cameras, catching 179 people in four days.

Transport Minister Andrew Constance said the actions of the 500 people per day caught were reckless and stupid.“Some drivers are just not getting the message, they’re a bit slow and they need to wake up to themselves,” he said on Tuesday.
