A government-commissioned report on the territory's gas industry, kept hidden from the public for two years, has forecast the NT's emissions could rise up to 150 per cent.

An NT government-commissioned report has found a new Beetaloo Basin development and LNG expansions could increase the NT's emissions up to 150 per cent.

Energy Producers of Australia says all the gas companies operating in the NT including Tamboran in the Beetaloo have plans to deal with their emissions. It said even with no new projects, an increasing amount of greenhouse gas coming from Darwin's two existing gas plants was expected to increase the NT's emissions by 25 to 50 per cent.

Tamboran, Empire Energy and Santos are currently test fracking in the Beetaloo Basin to decide whether it is worth moving their projects there into full production. The NT government, currently led by Eva Lawler, has not committed to reducing emissions by 43 per cent by 2030 in line with other Australian jurisdictions. But in an election scorecard letter to the Environment Centre, the Country Liberal Party opposition has promised a 43 per cent emissions cut by 2030."That is why we are committed to the government target of 43 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2023, and zero emissions by 2050.
