Johanna Bryan's son was born inside the Indiana Women's Prison last year.
ANDERSON, Ind. — At her home in Anderson, Johanna Bryan is thankful for each day with her 1-year-old son, Zavid.
"I call him my redemption baby," Johanna said."It was my last chance to do something right. I just love him every day, and he me a reason to live and live right." "I had a rough live growing up and probably didn't make the best choices in adulthood," said Johanna."I would do his footprints, because I always felt like he was standing by me," Johanna said."We were in it together, unfortunately."After Zavid's birth, Johanna became one of the first women to pilot the Promises of Parenting program inside the nursery of the Officer Breann Leath Maternal Child Health Unit.
"Having him, I got a new lease on life," Johanna said."I know that sounds cliché, but that is exactly what it is." Promises of Parenting, which is led by faculty at the Indiana University School of Medicine, recently received $468,000 from Early Years Initiative from Early Learning Indiana."It really made me feel like I wasn't just a statistic or a mess-up," Johanna said."People really cared about incarcerated individuals having kids and not just writing them off. It really felt like we could really be a decent parent to them.
