Ultimo Press aims to publish 60 books a year.
If Sydney authors have ever cast an envious look south of the border at the independent publishing scene in Melbourne then perhaps the new Ultimo Press might make them feel better.
Sydney is the home of the large international publishing companies in Australia – Penguin Random House, Hachette, Pan Macmillan, HarperCollins and Simon & Schuster. It also has Allen & Unwin, one the largest independents, which publishes about 250 titles a year.Melbourne is the long-time home of Penguin but since its merger with Random House it has been largely run from Sydney.
Grant agreed that book sales had been improving everywhere. "Publishing is always pressing a year to 18 months ahead so I am predicting a better environment for us to arrive in with some momentum rather than arriving and wondering what we should be doing," he said. "I'm feeling that now is the time."
Grant, whose company publishes about 400 books a year, including 150 for children, said an international perspective was important in the establishment of Ultimo.
