Earth's upper atmosphere is becoming less dense as the planet warms, leaving satellites in orbit longer and increasing collision risks, new research suggests.
rbit will have lifetimes 30% longer under 1.5 degrees Celsius of global warming, compared with the year 2000.
The recent findings bolster those past conclusions and offer a new quantification of atmospheric change. The upper atmosphere is set to lose heat and density twice as fast over the next 50 years as it has in the past half century, according to the research. This acceleration closely follows the simultaneous expected rise in atmospheric CO2 levels between now and 2070, wrote the study author.Cnossen relied on computer models to come to that conclusion.

Lucy Zipped Past Earth to get a Gravitational Assist Towards Jupiter's TrojansGravitational assists are marvels of orbital mechanics. Usually, they are done for a combination of fuel (i.e., cost) savings and speed, as it is sometimes faster to take multiple trips around planets in the inner solar system to reach locations in the outer solar system more quickly. Lucy recently made such a maneuver on its … Continue reading 'Lucy Zipped Past Earth to get a Gravitational Assist Towards Jupiter’s Trojans'
