New research shows taste-aversion therapy helps hundreds of freshwater crocodiles avoid poisoning by cane toads spreading across the Kimberley.

A taste-aversion study in the Kimberley has recorded success in teaching freshwater crocodile s to avoid cane toad s.

The invasive species has made its way across northern Australia, destroying predator species such as freshwater crocodiles and goannas, impacting various ecosystems. The study, run by Macquarie University, Bunuba Rangers and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions between 2019 and 2022, baited four gorge systems — Windjana Gorge, Bandilngan, Danggu Geikie Gorge and Scrootens waterholes.

Dr Ward-Fear said once the cane toad invasion had arrived in the Fitzroy Valley, researchers saw no mortalities in the areas they had baited. "We're hoping the results of our research can be directly applied to that system, as well as other toad or toxic species invasions worldwide."DBCA invasive species project officer Sara McAllister said it was significant to observe how quickly the reptiles had learnt to avoid cane toads.A bevy of small mammals and lizards could find themselves on the endangered species list if cane toads got into the Pilbara. A bold plan could prevent the biodiversity disaster.
