A new 10-year school funding agreement is closer after Victoria and South Australia signed on, joining Western Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory, and the ACT. The Better and Fairer Schools Agreement (BFSA) will see the Commonwealth lift its share of public school funding to 25 percent. This move aims to finally bring public schools to the minimum funding levels recommended by the Gonski review in 2012.
Anthony Albanese told the National Press Club that South Australia and Victoria have now signed on to the Commonwealth's new school funding agreement.The agreement will see the Commonwealth lift its share of public school funding to 25 per cent from 20 per cent.If all the states and territories agree to the deal it would see public schools finally reach minimum funding levels recommended by the Gonski review in 2012.
"Today is about a principle that has driven me my whole life. No-one held back, and no-one left behind. "Importantly, this new agreement means accounting practices — like capital depreciation — can no longer be counted as education investment. Instead, every dollar of funding will go into helping children learn," Mr Albanese said. "It will help make sure every child gets a great start in life. What every parent wants. And what every Australian child deserves," Mr Clare said.with state education ministers breaking party unity to call on federal Labor to honour an aspiration it took to the last election to fully fund public schools.
Amid growing criticism from teachers' unions, last year independent and Catholic schools called for public schools to also be fully funded.
