Sixteen months after the Serena Williams meltdown that rocked the tennis world the rule that triggered it has finally been changed. One respected commentator says it could ruin the next generation of female players. 9WWOS AusOpen

"If you're a player and one of your strengths is as a problem solver you are taking away a major part of that person's strength but also it is inherently unfair.

Even if Mouratoglou's assertion that every coach was guilty of breaching the rule "100 per cent of the time" Smith said it could be weeded out if the penalties were severe enough. "If you're a repeat offender you're out for the tournament. That's all you have to do and then it won't happen."While the WTA's decision to allow coaching will only be seen in top level tournament play for the first time in Dubai and Hungary this month it has already come in at junior level and was trialed in the qualifying rounds at last year's US Open.

"I think it's going to be terrible from a spectacle point of view, I think it will be an absolute mess."While the rule change will play a role in reshaping the landscape of women's tennis, at this stage there is no indication that the ATP will follow suit, meaning courtside coaching will still be outlawed in the men's game.
